Quick Tirami-sł

The name translates, roughly, as "pick me up," which the sugar and caffeine should do!

8 oz. cream cheese, soft
2 packages vanilla instant pudding mix
1/2 c strong coffee (or 1/2 c water + 1-2 T dry instant coffee)
1/2 c marsala or sherry
3 c cold milk (must be cold)
1 8-oz. tub Cool Whip (or equivalent amount of whipped cream)
2 oz. semi-sweet chocolate, coarsely grated
lady fingers, sponge cake, pound cake (not angel food cake, not jellyroll)
1 c fresh or frozen (drain & save juice for something else) strawberries or raspberries (optional)

Grate chocolate and set aside. If using a block of hard-ish chocolate (such as Baker's semi-sweet), leave the wrapper on and microwave for about 10 seconds. Watch! I use the old-fashioned, dangerous metal grater, not a microplane grater. I have never tried in the food processor.

Mix milk and cream cheese. Add pudding. Mix. Add Cool Whip. Mix.

Line the bottom of a rectangular casserole pan (or bowl) with the cake of choice. It takes a 1 1/2 packages of lady fingers. Dribble on coffee and marsala/sherry (I use plain old jug sherry from the grocery store).

Layer half the pudding and half the chocolate. Add berries if using. Repeat with pudding and chocolate.

Refrigerate overnight covered well with tinfoil to allow the liquids to penetrate the cake and for the custard to mellow. Keep refrigerated until serving time.

With a bowl, you'll have to serve with a spoon. With a casserole dish, you can make an effort, no matter how successful, of cutting into pieces before serving!
